Buck Knife Review Coming This Week

This friday I am starting the South East Idaho fishing update so everyone knows whats going on with the lakes and streams for their days off.  The product review is going to be something I use at least 3 times a year but makes a huge impact on a hunt. A good hunting knife is the difference between a good hunting trip and a amazing one.  I will be reviewing My trusty Buck hunting knife. I received a brand new buck knife about a week before hunting season and got to use it twice this year, it has been an amazing knife and I cannot wait for everyone to see the review.

Tex Creek Showdown

I have been privileged to hunt in Idaho most of my life. I have been able to watch the wildlife population dynamic change over the last 20 yr. I am so happy I still can hunt elk in herds like this.

One of Tex Creek's Many Elk Herd's Unit # 69

I was hunting in the TEX creek unit #69 this year and was blessed with the opportunity to see a beautiful herd of elk. I was also lucky enough to take a very nice mature dry cow to help with population density on this fragile winter range. This was an amazing hunt because my Father and I were able to spend a lot of time hunting this big unit for elk. On November 20, 2012 my father and I were hunting in Idaho’s unit # 72 for cow elk. The day started like many other days we got up early loaded the 4-Wheeler in the truck and headed for the unit. We would drive to the look out and glass for elk in the early morning. If we didn’t see Elk off the Lookout we would find some nice timber and still hunt till afternoon. We were lucky that it had been snowing so we were excited all the way to the lookout.  At first light I spotted a lot of deer but no elk so we decided to walk down to the bottom of a deep canyon where we had seen elk 2 days earlier.

Elk Tracks going into the Canyon 11/20/2012

My father was going to be one canyon over and were would meet up at the bottom where the two canyons met. About an hour into my hike I spotted a herd of elk across the canyon. The elk did not notice me so I found a place to lie down and put my pack on a rest. I ranged the elk at just over 600 yds. I waited till the lead cow stopped to eat grass on the side hill. I made my range adjustment 9.5 MOA and put the crosshair on her pump station and pulled the trigger. The gun went off and the elk started running. The lead cow did not move, she stood there for a few moments then fell down and started to slide to the bottom of the hill. I went to the bottom of the canyon and meet my father. We went to the truck to get the 4-wheeler, drove it to the ridge, and walked to the cow. We used the wench to drag the elk out to the truck. This is one of my best shots to date and I hope one day to achieve a 900-1000 yd. shot on an animal.

Opening day Is your best bet for a Good Mule Deer

My fall started with Mule Deer season opening in Idaho on the 10th of October this year. I am very blessed to have been able to hunt in the same spot for most of my life. It is very steep and unforgiving  in places and you have to walk to get the glimpse of a deer. The last couple years we have not been able to take a deer from this unit. But as we drove up the dirt road a few hours before light, I had never been so excited to get into the woods. As we parked the truck and headed up the hill the cold air tightened my chest, it was so cold I could barely breath. I reached the top of the hill and stopped waiting for first light to peak over the hill. As I sat there I felt so in tune with my surrounding, I could hear the birds chirping as my dad coming up the trail to sit beside me. As the sun came up I noticed a very nice 4x4 mule deer coming up the draw. I signaled to my dad as he strained looking for the deer, he finally saw the buck and asked if he could shoot it. Thinking of the year before when he let me take a very nice buck he spotted I nodded yes. He layed his rifle over a rock, covered by my jacket, and took aim. My heart was racing when I heard the shot ring out, the buck jumped but did not run. As I watched him sway back and forth I knew it was a good shot and he fell right where he had been standing moments before.

As I was congratulating my father for a great shot we spotted another deer running up the hill. As I brought my scope to my eye the deer grabbed another gear and headed for the saddle at the top of the ridge. I herd my father say that is another 4x4. I  knew I was going to have to lead  the deer so I put my cross hairs on the end of his noise, knowing it would hit him in the neck at that range and started squeezing the trigger. As the gun went off the deer rolled and was gone in the sage brush. As I got to wear the deer was last seen I hoped I made a good shot shooting free hand on a moving deer is tough. When I got to the deer I had hit him right were I wanted right in the neck.  This is one of the best hunting trips I had been on in last few years. There is nothing better then hunting with family especially your father the guy who showed me how to hunt and fish.
